Harry's Story

Thanks to his Unite membership, he was able to make a claim through Unite Legal Services and secure a substantial amount of compensation which he kept in full.

Unite Legal Services helped Harry, a member, to secure compensation after he sustained serious leg injuries in a road traffic accident.

Harry was crossing a road in the early hours of the morning after a night out when he was struck by a taxi, causing serious open fractures to his tibia and fibula. Although initially treated with a plate and screws, unfortunately, his injury became infected and he needed further surgery to remove the internal metalwork. He also underwent bone, skin and muscle grafts, and needed an external frame fitted to his leg which he had to wear for 10 months. After suffering more infections and admissions to hospital, the external frame was eventually removed. However, the initial fracture had not healed properly, and he broke his leg again in exactly the same place as he did in the initial incident. Harry later underwent successful surgery to insert a nail into the bone.

Although he has made a good recovery, Harry has been left with severe scarring to his leg, lifelong symptoms and psychological trauma. He has not been able to return to his role as a gas engineer, but his employer has found him an alternative administrative role as a gas technician.
