Members urged to contact Unite Legal Services if affected by Caparo Industries cuts

Unite members in the West Midlands will be aware that the present government is claiming that it is intent on creating a Northern Powerhouse, but this appears to be an empty promise as the onslaught on the British steel industry continues.

Following on from the closure of the Redcar steel mill, with the loss of 2,200 jobs, and Tata Steel confirming plans to shed 1,100 workers at sites in Scunthorpe and Scotland, the West Midlands has been hit with the announcement that up to 1,700 jobs may go within Caparo Industries.

Caparo is now in administration and members across multiple sites have been affected.

Gerard Coyne, West Midlands regional secretary at Unite the Union, has made it clear: “We will support our Caparo members in any way we can. Unite Legal Services is also exploring a Protective Award Claim in the name of the union on their behalf.

“So if you were a Unite member working at Caparo, and you have been affected, please contact us on 0121 647 4317 or at unite.caparo@unitetheunion.org.”
