Unite secures pay win for Mitie Manchester Airport workers

Unite, the UK’s leading union, has secured a major pay victory on behalf of workers employed by Mitie at Manchester Airport.

Approximately 300 workers employed by Mitie, working on cleaning contracts (both landslide and airside) including window cleaning will see their pay increase from £11.54 an hour to £12.20, an increase of 5.7 per cent.

The workers had voted for industrial action and announced strike dates. However, following last ditch negotiations, an improved offer was made, strikes were called off, as members were balloted on the improved offer which was accepted.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “This is an excellent victory for our members employed by Mitie at Manchester Airport, who were prepared to stand together and take industrial action.

“This result underlines how Unite’s commitment to always focus on our members’ jobs, pay and conditions, is delivering significant pay increases for workers.”

Unite will be looking to build on this pay victory across Manchester Airport, to ensure that all Unite members are paid fairly.

Unite regional officer John O’Neill said: “This was an important victory for a group of low paid workers.

“Unite will now be looking to build on this victory for low paid workers across Manchester Airport, to ensure all workers receive a fair day’s pay. The message to workers is clear, if you want to secure a pay increase, then join Unite and make sure your colleagues are members too.”
